Walter Tull (1889 - 1918). Tull was one of Britain's first black professional footballers, playing for Northampton Town in the years leading up to the First World War. Tull enlisted in 1914, survived the Battle of the Somme and had his bravery rewarded with promotion. He became at that time, the first black officer in the British Army. Tragically, Tull was killed in No Man's Land in 1918.
