Representatives from businesses including Barclaycard, Travis Perkins, Mad 4 Life and Smurfit Kappa ran inspirational workshops all day in various locations around the school covering topics such as personal development, interview skills, negotiation, team-building and confidence in careers.
Students also relished the opportunity to fine-tune their interview skills with a host of other business and educational establishments, as well as The Department for Work and Pensions, The British Army and Northamptonshire Police.
Students were asked to come to school smartly dressed in business clothes ready for the day and enjoyed the chance to practice a range of professional skills, which will be critical for impressing prospective universities, employers, colleagues and clients in the future.
Mark and Julie Kennedy from Mad 4 Life who ran a workshop on Growth Mindset said, “We have been coming to Northampton Academy since 2010 and every year the students blow us away with their drive and engagement. They have set themselves goals and know what they want to achieve. It was an absolute pleasure to work with them once again.”
Antonio Paxi, User Interface Designer at Barclaycard commented, “During our workshops, the students were very positive about making a big impact on their future, I was pleasantly surprised by their determination.”
Year 10 student Esther Sunmonu said, “It was great to experience interviews and learn new skills. I received valuable advice on which path I should follow to achieve my ambition to become a paediatrician one day”.
Karen Betty, Careers Manager at the Academy said, “Maximise Your Potential Day’ is part of Northampton Academy’s six-month learning programme on career development for Year 10 and it was an excellent and invaluable opportunity for students to put theory into practice, as with the Year 12 Enterprise Ambassadors who also took part. We were delighted to see so many business volunteers sharing their career expertise and pathways known to guide students towards the important decisions they will make Post-16.”
“On behalf of everyone at the Academy, I would like to thank all the visitors that gave their time for this event which was well received by all involved and an amazing learning experience for our students.”
