My Culture Day

Dear Parent/Carer,

To celebrate and promote our diverse Northampton Academy community, we will be holding a “My Culture Day” on Friday 29th March 2019. The day will provide students and staff with an opportunity to share and learn about cultural traditions through food, stories and reflection.

Northampton Academy is a very diverse school, with representation from most continents among our staff and students. In fact, there are over 60 different languages spoken within the Academy. We feel our diversity is something that is not just worth mentioning but should be celebrated too.

The day will be a cross-curricular day and will have four themes running throughout:

“The Power of Babel”- Modern Foreign Languages (Teaching point: - Language diversity is the norm, most people in the world speak more than one language).

“On the Move!”- Geography (Teaching point: - population movement is normal and happen for a variety of reasons).
“The World is Our Kitchen”- Food Technology (Teaching point: - The British diet is ever changing and is influenced by many cultures. Food is a global commodity. There is an unequal distribution of food in the world).

“Global Colours”- Art and Design Technology (Teaching Point: - A reflection on the diversity of our school community; designing a mural that represents us).

We believe that it is fundamental that the lessons taught and every activity focus on two of our Core Values: Respect and Tolerance. This means that throughout the day, in every lesson, the students will be taught implicitly and explicitly the Academy Values of Respect and Tolerance.
We are asking the students to come dressed in cultural wear that they feel represents them (Mufti Day). Students are also asked to bring in £1 as a donation to charity. The proceeds will go towards a School in Kenya the Academy is supporting and Comic Relief.

Please note that due to GCSE exams being a matter of weeks away, Year 11 will be completing lessons as normal.

Thank you in advance for your continued support. Please feel free to contact me for further information.

Kind regards,

Mr Anderson
Director of Character and PSHE
