World Book Day 2019

Categories: Latest Academy News, Featured

To celebrate World Book Day 2019 Northampton Academy been taking part in various reading activities, both on the day and during the weeks leading up to the event.

Teachers and support staff dressed up as their favourite book characters and distributed free books to students during lunchtime, in addition to book tokens, which have been given out in the library during lessons

Students have collectively been reading ‘Lamb to the Slaughter' by Roald Dahl, in six sections, during each lesson throughout the day.

To further encourage reading in school, students have participated in the ‘Read for Good’ Readathon. Money raised from this will be used to give books and storyteller visits to disadvantaged children in schools and hospitals. Year 7 student April raised a staggering £144 during the Readathon.

Students have also been taking part in a ‘Pizza Box Book Review’, using pizza boxes to creatively write a review of their favourite book, with the chance to win a £15 pizza voucher from a local pizza restaurant.

To top all this, the Academy celebrated International Book Giving Day during February, when students were offered a choice of free books in the library.

Mrs Vince, Reading Ambassador said:

“At Northampton Academy, we recognise the importance of reading and introducing students to the world of books, improving their literacy, grammar and vocabulary skills, whilst firing their imaginations. We have many initiatives in place to encourage students to read, including daily tutor reading and timetabled ‘DEAR’ time (Drop Everything And Read).

The World Book Day activities complement our reading initiatives and create a real buzz about books in the school.  I found children talking about books, sharing and swapping favourites and genuinely motivated to read. Parents became involved in what their children were reading and shared precious time together talking about books.”
