Premier Experience for Elite Sport Students

Categories: Latest Academy News, Elite Sports, Sport

The Elite Sports students had a truly wonderful experience when Premier League referee André Marriner visited to give an inspirational talk.

André spoke with the students for one hour about why he chose a career as a referee, what a typical week looks like, and the level of preparation involved before a match. He discussed and took questions from students on the highs and lows of his career and the resilience needed to deal with certain situations and setbacks. He was asked, "What do you believe are the key ingredients of the best players you have shared a pitch with?" which led to a Character v Talent debate. He also talked about the benefits of VAR.

The Year 7 Football Squad were ecstatic when he announced that he would be refereeing their Year 7 County Cup game versus Wotton Park after the event!

Match report on the game itself:

After Wootton Park took an early lead, Northampton Academy got into their stride with some effective attacking football, which led to a 5-1 lead at halftime. The boys completed excellent performance in the 2nd half with the addition of three more goals. The goal scorers demonstrated the teamwork that had been on show throughout the game. André Marriner complimented both teams after the game. He commented on the levels of respect shown to each other and the high standard of football. On this occasion, he did not need to give out any yellow or red cards - a testament to the exemplary behaviour of both teams on the pitch.

Final Score

Northampton Academy 8 - Wootton Park 1

NA will play the winners of NSB v PW in the County Cup semi-finals in January. Before this, NA has a 4th Round national cup tie at home v Ashlawn School on Monday 6th December.
