Mental Health and Wellbeing Support
‘It is not just the absence of a mental health condition. It is a state of wellbeing in which the individual realises his or her own abilities and can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community’ (The World Health Organisation)
Life will always have ups and downs and our young people need to learn to accept upsets and disappointments as a normal part of life. However when a young person is having a difficult time, we acknowledge they may need support. We recognise that self-esteem is developed when someone feels good about themselves, listened to and valued by others. It has a direct link to how we relate to one another.
Here at Northampton Academy we acknowledge that through puberty, self-esteem is more vulnerable. We understand the need for sensitivity around individual needs and recognise that physical and emotional health may have a bearing on a young person’s ability to interact with others.
We provide opportunities for our young people to discuss their feelings and experiences in a safe environment. Together we agree what needs to happen to make positive changes for our students, empowering them to feel more in control of their lives.
