Virtual My Culture Day Introduction

Last year, Northampton Academy held its inaugural 'My Culture Day' and it was one of the highlights of the year. There was an outstanding level of participation and contribution as students took the opportunity to learn about different cultures and evaluate not only attitudes towards their own culture, but others too. Students came dressed in traditional cultural attire, we had "street food" from around the world and raised nearly £1000 for our international charity – Build Africa. As a result, we were awarded International School status from the British Council, because of our commitment to being global citizens. But most importantly, we had the opportunity to teach our young people Core Values - Respect, Neighbourliness, Integrity and Tolerance.

We were looking forward to hosting 'My Culture Day' in school again this year in March, but unfortunately, because of current circumstances, we have had to reschedule. We are still determined to have 'My Culture Day' in some format this year, so on Friday 26th June 2020, we will be having a 'Virtual My Culture Day', with our theme this year as 'Divided but United!'.

The day will be in two parts.

Part 1: 'Making a Difference at Home Challenge'

Part 1 is designed to encourage your child to take part in a challenge to 'Make a difference' either at home, in the community or to the environment.

Part 2: 'One World Together' Challenge

We will listen to diverse voices of cultural inspiration, watch and complete different recipes with parent/carer supervision and take part in the school's 'Don't Rush' Challenge.

The ‘Don’t Rush’ Challenge encourages students to share a video or photo of themselves transforming from their everyday look to one that represents their culture. Full instructions will be available in the 'My Culture Day' booklet which will be uploaded on this page and posted on Show My Homework as an announcement.

As your submissions would be shared on our website and social media, parent/carer permission is required to take part. Please submit your child’s video completing the challenge to the school using the channels below, by doing this you agree to this paragraph:

I give permission to publish photographs or videos of my Northampton Academy and United Learning website and social media channels including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Local newspapers and publications may occasionally publish articles about school events etc. These are often supported by photographs and names of students. Images and videos may also be used on promotional materials such as the school prospectus, newsletters, leaflets, banners etc.

Please encourage your child to participate in all activities and proudly share images of their activities using any of the following:

During the last few weeks, we have witnessed our society experience an emotional rollercoaster with protests around the world demanding equality and justice for all. I am very proud of Northampton Academy and our pillars of Character - Tolerance, Respect, Integrity, Determination and Ambition. To me, that is what it means to have a well-rounded education and 'My Culture Day' is an extension of that; it creates an environment that fosters well-rounded, welcoming and understanding young people. Please join us as we celebrate diversity and as we celebrate each other.

Thank you for your continued support.

Your sincerely,

Mr C. Anderson
