Year 7 students recently took part in an engaging library lesson designed to support their book choices for DEAR Time (Drop Everything And Read). The activity encouraged students to discover different genres and explore the wide range of books available in the library.
The session began with a short Q&A introducing the benefits of reading and students’ rights as readers. Many were surprised to learn they can stop reading a book they don’t enjoy and visit the library as often as needed to find one they love.
Tables were arranged with books from different library zones, along with a map to guide students through the activity. Working in teams, students created a fun, book-themed name before rotating around the library to explore each zone.
At each table, groups discussed and selected the best cover, blurb, and opening for that genre until a bell signalled it was time to move on. House Points were awarded for respectful discussion and strong teamwork.
At the end of the lesson, students had the opportunity to borrow any books they had explored. Many books were borrowed and reserved, with lively conversations reflecting the success of the session for both students and staff.
These sessions offer a valuable opportunity for students to explore the library’s diverse collection. Each student left with a bookmark explaining how to access the school library website, and winning titles from each lesson are now displayed in the library. A free booklet featuring all the books is also available, helping to inspire reading across the entire year group.
