We are so proud of our Year 12 Library Leaders, Senia and Badriyah. They have been participating in the Library Leader Award Programme, supported by the School Library Association, since Year 8 and are our highest achieving leaders to date, currently at Gold Award. The training programme provides library leaders with a wealth of transferable skills and opportunities to show ambition in promoting reading, literacy and the library. Senia and Badriyah delivered their library projects as part of working towards their Platinum Award, the highest level of achievement, which is an accolade worth celebrating.
Here is a short summary of their projects in their own words:
Senia, Year 12, Gold Award Library Leader – Library Survey
My library project was a survey asking members of the school what their favourite genres were. We handed out a leaflet containing all the options of genre the school library has to offer for 2 weeks; we managed to get results from a range of year groups, and some teachers took part as well, leading to over 1000 votes.
We found out that romance was the most popular with 92 votes, crime and mystery followed close behind. The library has recently stocked up on romance books for all year groups to enjoy and we have plenty of crime and mystery books. I created bar chart displaying all the votes for the favourite genres and a poster containing the top 3 genres and a variety of books for those genres.
Badriyah, Year 12, Gold Award Library Leader – Biotechnology Week
To mark National Biotechnology Day, I decided to celebrate the achievements of scientists, engineers, and researchers across the board by dedication an entire week to exploring groundbreaking discoveries – one field at a time. Each day centred around a new science.
• Monday was physics - the latest in mars exploration.
• Tuesday was biotechnology - innovative applications like early cancer diagnosis and rise of commercial biotech.
• Wednesday was biology - the astonishing potential of stem cells to grow structures outside the human body.
• Thursday was chemistry - how hydrogen production could unlock cheaper, cleaner fuel.
• Friday was psychology - the cognitive effects of social media.
Five different fields serve as a reminder that science in each form keeps pushing the limits of what’s possible.
