Our Character At Home Programme

‘Crisis doesn’t create character, it reveals it’

Following the Government’s decision to close schools in England, Northampton Academy is taking the opportunity to continue to develop students’ character whilst you are away from school.

This is an opportunity for you to put all the values that you have been learning about at school into practice and show what a well-rounded young person you are developing into. We will continue to deliver our programme and ask that you and your parents/carers engage in the offer.

It is argued that Character Education is not only ‘caught’ through the ethos and values of the school but can also be ‘taught’ through explicit lessons, assemblies and form time. As an Academy we also try to develop the ‘sought’ aspect, where students actively seek to develop their own character. This extraordinary situation we find ourselves in allows this to happen.

Parents/Carers

Parents play a crucial role within the process. We want parents/carers to actively encourage their child to engage and then reinforce these character values at home.

You can access the Character at Home programme using the links and downloads featured below.

Character Strength Training Challenges at Home

Please download your ‘Character Strength Traning Challenges at Home' booklet to complete during lockdown, where you will be able to achieve either a Bronze, Silver or Gold level dependent on how engaged they are with this programme. Reward assemblies will be held on our return and badges will be presented to students who complete each level.

Character Enrichment

We encourage students to take part in our Character Enrichment Programme. Staff will be linked to the clubs for students to send any questions to about what they should be doing.

On the Character Enrichment timetable, you will find a range of clubs and challenges associated with a set of four character traits; moral, performative, intellectual or civic values. Students can choose these opportunities based on the values they would most like to enhance.

Character Enrichment is available on the Teams Character Enrichment group. Please find a timetable with direct links to the clubs and challenges below. Character Challenges can be completed at any time and submitted to submit@northampton-academy.org

We would like you to send any pictures of what you have done, so we can share them on our newsletter and social media pages. Please ensure your photos come from your parents/carers email address, so we know we have their permission to share them.

Student Leadership

We promised to offer you at least one leadership opportunity every year. This will continue, and a programme of leadership opportunities programme can be found using the link below. We will also remind you in weekly assemblies. We ask that you engage with this and when parents/carers receive a ‘keep in touch’ call from a member of staff, we would love to hear about what you have been doing.

Virtual Assemblies

We will continue with a weekly assembly for each year group, which will focus around different character values and how they are applicable in the current crisis. We want you and your parents to watch these each week and reflect on the values explored. Live assemblies will be delivered via Teams during tutor time and links are posted on the website too, where you can watch any back that you have missed.

Sixth Form assemblies are available on the Sixth Form Team.

Character at Home Goody Bags!

We look forward to receiving your completed Character Strength Training booklets when you return to the Academy. Those students who completed the Character at Home passport during the first national lockdown received a goody bag, full of treats and other bits and pieces to celebrate their achievement.
We look forward to presenting any students with completed booklets with a similar reward this time around.
