The Dascombe Double

Categories: Sport

Lily Dascombe (year 9) and her brother Reece (year 7) spoke to the media about their sporting experiences during what was a frantic week of school sport.

On Tuesday, Lily starred in the first year 9 netball fixture of this campaign. After being a prominent player in last season’s squad, she linked up with fellow regulars and some fresh faces, against Malcolm Arnold Academy. The team and its coaches were happy with the performance, but the Academy returned home carrying a 13-4 loss, but a hat-trick of goals for Mia Bates.

Lily highlighted that the Academy “had control of the ball in the second quarter” and “defended well” in this phase of the game. She also admitted that Malcolm Arnold had a glaring height advantage. Had Academy not made “silly mistakes” as Lily acknowledged, the score may have not been as one sided as it ended up. It just wasn’t the Academy’s day. Lily voted Riyana as her Woman of the Match. In her Northampton Academy debut, she contributed an impressive shift, but she received a hit from the ball in the face for her efforts. Despite this however, Rihanna fought on, giving her all to the team and displaying the Academy values.

Reece Dascombe, footballer, has already protected the Academy goal on numerous occasions since starting in September. The agile asset was again called up to represent the Academy, but this time in a 5-a-side tournament at the Goals Centre.
Reece stood his ground between the sticks, helping Academy to win all of their first three matches, some against tough competition. However, their perfect start cracked during the fourth game, which subsequently saw the Academy lose three games on the bounce. Thanks to an outstanding start, the Blues finished joint fourth in the final standings.
Reece praised his team’s precision in possession, and highlighted strengths in attack and defence. He applauded the defence in “especially the last game” as, despite losing, Academy were on the back foot for the games’ majority.
Being a goalkeeper himself, Reece understands the importance of the defence, and he wasn’t shy to occasionally scrutinise his team. He expressed that the team need to “keep numbers back”, particularly when some are going forward. This is especially important in the fluid game of 5-a-side football. Leo Bates was the stand out player for Reece. While the Academy attacked at the opposing goal, Leo was the only player who was ready to defend valiantly when called upon.

Well done to all the students who represented the Northampton Academy this week. You have done us proud!
